Abstract
Biomass gasifiers which are operated at temperatures below 1 300℃ yield producer gas with heavy hydrocarbons(Tars),dust, soot particles, alkali metals, acids, alkali gases, etc.,which cause foul odours and emission problems. For most of these contaminants,well-developed measurement and reductionremoval techniques are available. However, for tar removal,at present there is dearth of universally accepted and economically feasible technology. The design and development of this jacketed cyclone is a determined effort in this direction. The jacketed cyclone that has been developed, could remove about 99.60% tar from producer gas using circulating water at the periphery of cyclone that was maintaining at a temperature of 5℃ with a uniform flow rate of 360 Lh.Apart from being simple and cheap, the jacketed cyclone is environment friendly because it reuses the circulating water and reduces the condensate that was formed with the other available technologies. This paper covers the design, development and performance evaluation of jacketed cyclone used for the reduction of tar content in producer gas.
