Anthropometric Dimensions,Hand and Isometric Strength of Farmers in East Java,Indonesia(Extracts)

  • Indonesia lacks sufficient publication on anthropometry of farmers, and moreover almost no data on hand and isometric muscle strength are available. This study was conducted to obtain anthropometric dimensions, hand and isometric muscle strength of Javanese and Madurese farmers in East Java,Indonesia. The collected data are important for ergonomic design of agricultural, especially hand tools used by farmers, based on their body dimensions, hand and isometric strength.Dimensions and strength of 321 farmers were measured in this study.Eighty male and 85 female farmers of Javanese and 76 male and 80 female farmers of Madurese tribes were considered to represent the majority of East Java′s ethnic composition. The measurements were made for body dimensions, age, weight, hand grip, hand squeeze and isometric strength conditions. The body mass index(BMI)values of Javanese and Madurese male and female farmers fall within normal classification. In hand squeeze,Javanese farmers are found stronger than Madurese farmers. The correlation between selected anthropometric dimensions, and strength of Javanese and Madurese farmers(both male and female)varied from -0.717 for correlation between age(years)with torso pull in bent position while palm facing down to 0.583 for correlation between stature and hand squeeze strength.
